Whenever we travel, it’s always fun to encounter the unexpected.
With Mark’s background in wedding planning, we often encounter a wedding or a couple taking wedding portraits somewhere.
However, this event really took us by surprise as we were exploring Edinburgh.
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein
Walking down the Royal Mile heading to Holyrood Palace, we ran straight into film crews all along the street.
Netflix was filming Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of the Mary Shelly classic Frankenstein. They initially said the working titles were “Doctor Frankenstein” and “Prodigal Father.”
This adaptation is described as an emotional story and not just a horror film.
According to online sources, in addition to the filming in Edinburgh, they were scheduled to shoot at Dunecht House in Aberdeenshire, Hospitalfield House in Arbroath, and Glasgow Cathedral.
Parliament Square
At the time we were visiting, they were using the area in front of St. Giles’ Cathedral on Parliament Square for housing props, assembling the cast, and would later shoot some scenes.
We heard that some of the later scenes there included building a gallows for a public hanging.
The Strangest Things Happen In Edinburgh
Walking down the Royal Mile just past Parliament Square, we passed groups of actors heading farther down the street to where the shooting was taking place.
It was pretty strange to see them in period pieces, randomly walking down the sidewalk alongside locals and tourists.

Especially seeing two women in their costumes, with the skirts pulled up with hair clips, wearing modern sunglasses, and talking on their cell phones.

At one point, Chuck passed a woman who was herding a large group of “urchins,” and kids were being kids. He commented, “God Bless You,” to which she laughed and said that they weren’t that bad.
Unfortunately, it all happened too fast to snap a photo.
The Royal Mile
Further down the Royal Mile, we encountered them preparing for shooting.
They transformed the streets by covering the pavement with mulch. They brought in nearly a dozen horse-drawn carriages, and several dozen actors and extras were preparing for the shoot.
Unfortunately, they directed most of us off the streets and down alleys to the adjoining street, where we took to get to Holyrood Palace at the bottom of the hill.
The Cast
According to media outlets, Del Toro’s adaptation of the classic Gothic thriller has assembled a star-studded cast including Saltburn star Jacob Elordi, Moon Knight actor Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth, who most recently led horror sequel MaXXXine.
Netflix is scheduled to air this movie in November of this year! We can’t wait!
Rumor has it you can find the trailer on YouTube!
