Mark And Chuck's Adventures - Raj Ghat - Mahatma Gandhi - India travel - statue of Mahatma Gandhi

Raj Ghat – Mahatma Gandhi Memorial

Posted on March 11, 2020May 16, 2020 by Chuck

The first day of touring got us started at 7:30 which was pretty early considering we got in so late the night before from our food tour. We were staying in New Delhi and had about a 30-minute drive to Old Delhi. We drove along winding streets, some beautiful and some not so beautiful. I’ll just leave it at that.

Our second stop for the day was at Raj Ghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869, and was assassinated On January 30, 1948. His killer was Nathuram Godse who fired 3 bullets into his chest.

Gandhi was an Indian lawyer and a political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead a successful campaign for India’s independence from the British. His efforts inspired movements for civil rights around the world.

Raj Ghat is a memorial dedicated to Gandhi. The black marble platform is the exact spot where he was cremated and millions of people attended the cremation. It was a very surreal experience knowing who he was and the huge impact he made on the people of India and the world.

Kathy and Sandra from our tour group had a moment at the memorial that I was able to capture. One of those moments that needed to be captured.

Here are a few quotes that are on both sides of the walkway leading to the platform. As we all know his quotes are thought-provoking and inspiring.

While we were waiting to get in we ran across a bunch of school girls. They were very excited to see us.
